Two Go Mad at Brooklands...

images It was an early start Sunday morning and as I scraped the ice off the car, my thoughts would have normally been fairly grumpy being up so early and in the cold. However, this morning things were very different.

Driving to my dad’s for the agreed 7:00am start I found he already had the mighty Escort warming up, for today we were both heading south to Surrey for last ‘Brooklands Breakfast’ of the season. I should mention that this particular Escort was a Mk4 Eclipse that was my first car that my dad has taken over and is currently restoring. If you have read the ‘about Tynny’ page you will realize that we have done quite a bizarre swap, (albeit with some amount of time in between) So putting it simply, the 60 something has his son’sHot (…ish) Hatch and the 30 something has his dad’s classic. We’re not a conventional bunch.

Back to the day’s activities, this was my first visit to Brooklands, and needless to say I was rather excited. Boy, I was not disappointed. We arrived along with a line of Porsches who had come as guests for the day from the Porsche Owners Club, the gates opened and we drove up to the paddock in front of the club house which we were allowed to park in as we were in a British car. Awesome.

A quick look around the paddock at the cars that had also arrived revealed a variety of marques from many different years, so with a spring in our step we headed off to the ‘Napier Room’ for our full English and a mug of tea! After Breakfast we headed back out to have proper look around the machines. The usual suspects were there: MGs and TRs but there were also cars such as an Aston Martin DB2, a couple of Porsche 356s, two Deloreans and a Morris Minor with a modified front end incorporating a dirty great Rover V8!

We then wandered over to Malcolm Campbell’s shed in which we found not only some fantastic machines but also the smell. Oh! The smell. No word of a lie, I just could not get over this wonderful aroma; a blend of oil, petrol, rubber and leather. Mixed together this was true nirvana to me.

We then visited the members banking which was a dream come true. I have always wanted to see the banking in the flesh and while I stood there, memories of the train journeys from Waterloo to Axminster for holidays with my Aunt and Uncle came flooding back. My nose pressed hard against the train window as we went through Weybridge and Byfleet, feeling my heart race as this fascinating concrete shape loomed out of the trees. Magic!

Time was getting on now, dad needed to be back by lunchtime so we had a quick look around the Wellington hanger and headed for home. This was a truly great morning and dad and I have planned to, if possible, attend all of next seasons ‘Breakfast Clubs’. As we didn’t see everything this time, it means we will have more playing, sorry adult interest things to look at next time…

Enjoy the photos.
